In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Industrial Revolution produced a tremendous amount of greenhouse gases.  At the end of that period, just before the 20th century, scientists started to observe changes in the climate.  For most of the 20th century as industry thrived, scientists were discovering the impacts in climate, including launching satellites into space to observe and pass laws to limit/eliminate the emissions that would harm the environment.  In the 21st century, we are continually trying to mitigate the damage that was done over the few centuries.
